What is a Montessori School?

If you’re a new parent, researching early childhood education, you may be considering Montessori School. You’ve probably heard that the Montessori Method is a highly regarded educational philosophy, and it’s been around a long time. But what exactly is a Montessori school?

Developed by Maria Montessori, the Montessori Method is based on scientific observation of children. It focuses on child-led learning and strives to educate children in ways that will benefit them in real life. Children are not just taught academic information, but useful skills that will help make them good members of the community.

Dr. Montessori’s work created a shift in the way people view education. For over a century, it has proven to be successful. Here are some of the components that make this method so unique:

  • Child-focused rather than teacher focused. A Montessori teacher is more of a facilitator, creating an atmosphere of learning, offering demonstrations, and observing and keeping records of each child’s behavior and growth. Children move from activity to activity at their own pace, discovering new information through hands-on experience.
  • Emphasis on character development and inner discipline, rather than simply on rules. The atmosphere in a Montessori classroom is one of respect: teachers treat children with respect, children respect the teacher and each other. Because children are allowed to take responsibility for their own learning and learn from their mistake, they develop self-discipline, courage, self-reliance, and many other positive character traits.
  • Structured activities in a prepared environment create a calm atmosphere. Children are given time and space to enjoy and focus on their work. Teachers guide and act as consultants, but do not interrupt a child’s work unnecessarily. As a result, children gain a sense of accomplishment and develop their self-esteem.
  • A whole child approach helps children reach their full potential. By striving to help children develop their cognitive, physical, creative and socio-emotional capacities, rather than simply teaching them facts to remember, Montessori schools enable them to become lifelong learners. A program that focuses on the education of the whole child is more likely to help children grow into independent thinkers.
